He was born in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. Bala’s family was closely related to the film industry as his grandfather owned the Arunachal Studios. His father Jeyakumar was a director who had directed over 350 films and documentaries. His brother Siva has also worked as a director and cinematographer in the film industry.
