Biography of Ranjit Barot
Ranjit Barot is a famous Indian composer, music director, music arranger, drummer, and singer who was born in the year 1959, Mumbai, India. He has known A.R Rahman for a long time. He is presently a member of John McLaughlin and 4th Dimension and has been called “One of the leading edges in Drumming” by guitarist legend John Mclaughlin.
Early Life and family
Ranjit grew up in a household steeped in Indian Classical Music and dance, so melody and rhythm were always a part of his life. Sitara Devi, a renowned Kathak dancer was his mother.

Even at the age of 12, his response to the western drum equipment was almost organic, and his natural flair, ease, and craft propelled him to become one of India’s finest drummers by the age of 17. He performed with the Jazz Yatra Sextet (with Louis Banks) at the Jazz Yatra in Europe in 1980, as well as with Pandit Ravi Shankar’s ensemble on the same trip. Travels to Europe and the west with leading Indian Jazz/pop and classical musicians were part f this phase. Between the years 1980 and 1982, Ranjit Performed at European Jazz festivals alongside Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie, Al Foster, Billy Higgins, Cecil Taylor, and Louie Bellson, to name a few.
Career
Ranjit’s ancestors come from both the north (Uttar Pradesh) and the west (West Bengal) (Gujarat). His mother is from Varanasi, and his father is from Gujarati. Ranjit has a huge history of composition and music production, with his state-of-art studio facility in Mumbai. In this capacity, he had the privilege of working with Bruce Swedien, a sound, and music production industry giant who mixed Ranjit’s songs on VandeMataram 2 and Senso Unico, an Indo-Italian feature film. Ranjit’s musical life and approach to a lot of his recent work have been greatly influenced by Bruce.

Ranjit’s critically praised debut album, “Bada Boom”, was released internationally in November 2010 and features some of the best musicians from India and the west. This album features Ustad Zakir Hussain, John McLaughlin, U.Srinivas, U.Rajesh, Scott Kisney, Matt Garrison, Wayne Krantz, Dominique Di Piazza, Harmeet Manseta, taufique Qureshi, sanjayDivecha, Tim Garland, Gwilym Symcock, Ayden Esen, and Elie Afif to name a few, performing Ranjit’s Jazz Fusion.

Ranjit recently served as the Music Composer and Sound Designer for the whole opening and Closing Ceremonies of the Common wealth Games in Delhi 2010 and is currently representing India at the World Economic Forum in Davos with his Live Performance. He is the leader of AR Rahman’s live band.
